Giant Hot Cross Buns

April 22, 2013

Bigger and Badder

I made 2 giant hot cross buns.  Why? Because it is hot cross bun season and the latest fashion in supermarkets seems to be making classic treats bigger, like giant cupcakes and giant trifles. I thought I would make a giant hot cross bun.  The recipe I used allowed me to make two.

This recipe was adapted from Asda Magazine (April, 2013).

500g bread flour, 1 tsp mixed spice, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 sachet action yeast, 75g caster sugar, 150g dried fruit, 250ml skimmed milk, 50g butter, 1 large egg lightly beaten.

1. Sift the flour mixed spice, cinnamon and a pinch of salt.
2. Add the yeast, sugar and mixed dried fruit.
3. Hat the milk and butter together in a pan until it melts and the mixture is lukewarm. (NOT HOT!)
4. Add the egg and the milk mixture to the flour and mix to form a dough.
5. Knead for 10 minutes then put the dough into a bowl with greased cling film covering it.
6. After it has doubled in size divide the dough into two and put into 2 prepared circular small baking tins.
7. Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees and bake for 25 minutes until browned lightly on the top.
